This is the fifth stop on ANHE's Regional Forums virtual "Road Show." The workshop begins with an overview of the legislative process and why it is imperative that nurses are at the table, then our Northwest Regional Forum Organizer and other state-level advocates will help prepare us for massive nurse involvement during next legislative session.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the unique role of nurses in advancing environmental health and informing state-level policies that reduce toxic exposures and promote healthier communities.
Examine current legislative priorities related to climate, environmental justice, and toxic exposures within the region, and discuss the implications for nursing practice and population health.
Increase participants’ capacity to understand the policymaking process, communicate evidence-based environmental health information, and collaborate with interdisciplinary partners to support informed decision-making.
Explain why community members' lived experience, priorities, and definitions of health should guide nursing advocacy, and how leaving them out can reinforce health inequities and erode trust.
Examine two common barriers nurses may face when engaging in local advocacy.
Discuss potential community engagement strategies nurses can utilize when partnering with community leaders and organizations, or community-based participatory research.
