Food & Agriculture

This workshop series covers very basic information that all nurses should know about the food system, the benefits of plant-based diets, the problem of food insecurity in the US, and how to bring healthier and more sustainable foods to our institutions (schools, hospitals, universities). It also covers very basic drinking water policies and a quick survey of policies that will help to create a healthier food and agriculture system.
This webinar series provides in-depth information and conversation about common agricultural-related health issues, such as pesticide exposure, cancer risk, exposure to heat, fire safety, and mental health challenges. We also address the influence of social, cultural, and political factors on the health status of farmworkers and their families.
This webinar series will describe extreme heat exposure and effects on farmworker health, explain significance of cancer screenings for farmworkers, especially for women of reproductive age. It will also discuss the health challenges farmworkers face physically, socially, and mentally, describe ways to increase health & safety awareness for these populations and recognize equitable health care practices and policies for farmworkers and their families.

The influence of social, cultural, and political factors on the health status of farmworkers and their families will also be discussed. This first in the series will discuss how to advocate for equitable health care for farmworkers, understand the challenges farmworkers face and learn ways to increase health & safety awareness.

For nurses who are interested in climate change, it is critical to understanding how the food system impacts and is impacted by climate change. It is estimated that 25 – 30% of greenhouse gases are attributed to the global food system. While this webinar will explore how climate change-associated weather patterns, extreme storms, and extreme heat events threaten both plant-based and animal-sourced food, we will also investigate how the predominant agricultural practices in the US are producing greenhouse gases, employing millions of pounds of fossil fuel-derived chemicals (including pesticides), and destroying ecosystems. We will also look at climate impacts from meat consumption versus plant-based diets. And finally, we will discuss nurses’ roles in making our food system more just and climate and eco-friendly.
The ANHE Food & Agriculture Committee presents the third webinar in a 3-part series “Plant-forward Diets: Benefits for Health and the Planet.” Our webinar speaker is Joanne Evans, RN PMHCNS-BC MEd, clinical specialist in adult psychiatric and mental health nursing and executive director and Healthy Nurses … Healthy Communities. Food production requires substantial resources, land, water, energy, which has impacts on the environment. There is a movement to move towards more sustainable food choices, but what exactly is a healthier diet for a healthy planet? A plant-forward diet has both benefits for personal health and the environment, while also reducing the emissions that worsen climate change. This webinar discusses the benefits of plant-forward eating and how nurses can work with individuals, health institutions, communities, and governments to advance healthy and sustainable diets.
The ANHE Food & Agriculture Committee presents the first webinar in a 3-part series “Promoting sustainability diets for human and planetary health: the healthcare provider’s role.” Featuring Becky Ramsing, Senior Program Officer, Food Communities & Public Health, at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, this webinar provides a description of the components of the food system - diet, public health, food production, and the environment – and how they interact and shape our daily lives. The food system faces constant pressures from resource depletion, lack of equity, population growth and climate disruption and the food we eat has environmental, health and climate impacts. Our speaker shares an overview of what is a sustainable diet and how nurses can provide guidelines for helping people make sustainable and healthy food choices.
Climate change and air pollution impact health but far less attention is given to soil. A thin layer of fertile soil has been sustaining life on Earth for millennia.
Join the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) Food and Agriculture Committee and our guests Saumya Ayyagari, MSN, MPH of Save Soil and Meghan Adelman, RN, BSN, MPH for this exciting event and learn about actionable steps nurses can take!
