Course summary
This presentation features leading public health researchers with expertise on exposures, health effects, and broader societal impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals.” Since a pivotal 2022 report from the National Academies on clinician guidance on PFAS blood tests, these chemicals have become increasingly relevant for clinicians and healthcare professionals. This presentation will provide an overview of sources of PFAS exposure, strategies for identifying and reducing PFAS exposure, PFAS health effects, medical monitoring and patient follow-up, PFAS blood testing, current regulations and policies, and resources for clinicians. The presentation promotes competencies for understanding and preventing PFAS exposures and related diseases to improve clinical care, especially for patients in communities with contamination.
